How To Make A Red Velvet Cake - Tutorial

Hello crafters!

Today i'm super excited to finally post a new mini 1:12 scale cake that I recently made along with a tutorial for how to make it!

This cake is actually a red velvet cake which I made out of using foam.  Never would think it, but foam & Puffy Paint work really well for mini cakes. It is really perfect if you can't or aren't in the mood to use clay.  Only minus about using foam is that the flaking isn't the best.  I'm sure it will probably work perfect on full cakes without flaking though!

Anyways, lets get to this tutorial!

First, I cut a circle out of the foam using scissors.  Since I was trying to make it a 1:12 scale cake, I used a 1:12 scale size cake stand, added a touch of glue to it, and stuck it to a piece of red foam.  I cut around the cake stand to make it the perfect circle.  This way, the cake could be the perfect size to fit on top of the cake stand.

Finished cutting out the first piece.  Added some glue to the top of the piece and placed it on a white piece of foam to make sure I get almost the exact same circle size as the first piece.  I did the exact same with the next piece of red foam.  Don't worry, the circle does not have to be perfect, we just want the illusion of the cake.

Once you have cut out all three pieces and glued them to each other, it is time to start making the icing!  Make sure to start the icing before cutting out the cake piece since after the icing sits out longer, it becomes thicker.
I made the icing by mixing Puffy Paint and Tacky Glue.  I have noticed overtime on some projects Puffy paint can get a bit sticky. It is about a week later after making the cake and mixing it with the glue and it seems perfectly fine.

Onto the base of the cake again!  Next, I just reglued the three pieces on top of each other to make sure they wouldn't come off.  After that, I used a marker to draw a few triangle shapes on the top of the cake to help me visualize where to cut the cake piece without cutting it too big or too small.  I used scissors to cut out a small triangle for the cake piece.

Ready for the messy part?  Once the cake piece is cut out, I just trimmed around and inside the cake to make it a touch more even.  Once it was good enough, I got a toothpick and painted some dark red Puffy Paint on the red part inside of the cake and cake piece as the red velvet part.  After that I painted the white icing part inside the cake with some of the white Puffy Paint and Tacky glue I mixed to fix any mistakes I made while painting in the dark red velvet color.  I then painted the whole outside of the cake and cake piece with the mix of white paint & Tacky Glue I mixed earlier.

The red velvet cake is perfectly finished!

Took awhile to make since it takes a few minutes to take pictures while crafting, but I really enjoyed it.  I'd say my favorite part about these foam cakes is that the pieces fit perfectly inside the cake.  So if one minute you want a red velvet cake with a cake piece that was cut out of it, you have it, if the next minute you want a full non-cut red velvet cake with white icing then you have it too!

I hoped you liked this tutorial!  Check back later, at the moment I'm editing a few new holiday inspired tutorials I'm planning to post soon, including How To Make Candy Canes, and How To Make Mini Wrapped Presents.
